WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced plans Wednesday to leave his various business interests behind so he can concentrate on his duties as president.
Trump sent a series of tweets Wednesday morning saying he planned a “major news conference” with his children on Dec. 15 to discuss the matter.
Trump said he will “be leaving my great business in total in order to fully focus on running the country in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The president-elect said he’s not obligated to do that but feels it is “visually important, as President, to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses.”
He wrote that legal documents were being drafted that would take him “completely out of business operations” and called the presidency a “far more important task.”
Trump made the announcement as he prepares to introduce his economic team. He’s tapped Steven Mnuchin, his top fundraiser and a former Goldman Sachs banker, as Treasury secretary. Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross is expected to become his Commerce secretary.
Also this week, Trump announced that Georgia Rep. Tom Price would run the Department of Health and Human Services and Elaine Chao would head the Department of Transportation.
