INDIANAPOLIS – Explosives specialists detonated what appeared to be a pipe bomb after crews went to the near north side in response to reports of a possible explosive.

Police evacuated the immediate area around 13th Street and Central Avenue Tuesday afternoon. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security were on the scene. Police called for an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit after finding a device inside a home in the 1200 block of Central Avenue. Police said witnesses reported seeing a “squatter” leave the area before they arrived.

A bank representative was checking on a bank-owned property and saw something suspicious on the front porch. That individual also found the explosive inside the home and called police.

Police stopped all vehicle and foot traffic in the area as a precaution. The device was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
