NDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 9, 2015) – A DNA match led to criminal charges in connection with a 1998 cold case murder in Indianapolis, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Johnny Jones is charged with murder, rape and burglary resulting in bodily injury the Nov. 5, 1998, death of Kenya Edwards.

According to court documents, detectives found Edwards’ partially burned body in a residence in the 3800 block of North Tacoma Avenue in November 1998. In 2009, cold case specialists reviewed the case and submitted evidence for DNA testing. In February 2015, cold case detectives were notified of a match to Jones.

Jones is currently being held in the Indiana Department of Correction for an unrelated 2014 conviction of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. Detectives said previous crimes committed by Jones had similarities to Edwards’ case.

Jones is due in court on Sept. 14 for an initial hearing.
