(CNN) — In Indiana today (Sunday), community members at a Michigan City church celebrated the return of one of their own.

Six-year-old Nathan Reul was rescued after falling into a sand hole at the Indiana Dunes National Park — he spent 3 1/2 hours buried under 11 feet of sand.

At the church service today, Nathan’s older brother, Jake Reul, talked about the dramatic rescue — and what he did to help get his little brother back. “I was digging with my hands and, once the shovels started getting there, I started digging with shovels. And then, they just had us back up.”

Jake says he’s so thankful for all those who helped him dig Nathan out.

According to the family, Nathan is expected to be released from the hospital on later this week.
