INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Nov. 20, 2014)– A truck hauling piglets overturned on the west side of Indianapolis Thursday night.

The Wayne Township Fire Department (WTFD) tells FOX59 that they discovered that the truck was hauling 2,058 pigs when they arrived on the scene.

The accident happened on the ramp from northbound I-465 to I-74 westbound. The piglets were being transported from a North Carolina farm to a farm in Iowa. This hauler is said to be a normal mode of transportation for the piglets and the large number of piglets were not unusual for this type of farm-to-farm transportation, according to the fire department.

WTFD estimates that 700 pigs did not survive, due to some of the piglets being crushed under the truck, and others falling on top of them.

The remaining pigs are en route to the Indiana State Fairgrounds – the most immediate place available to handle the situation.

It is not known what caused the hauler to overturn.
