Three people are dead and 26 have been taken to area hospitals after a bus overturned near 96th Street and Keystone Avenue. Witnesses say they saw the bus roll over after turning off I-465.

The bus, carrying mostly teenagers from Colonial Hill Baptist Church here in Indy, was on the way back from Camp CoBeAc in Prudenville, MI.

A total of 37 passengers were onboard. The injured were taken via helicopters and ambulances to Wishard, Riley, Community North and Methodist hospitals. IndyGo buses were called in to assist in transporting the less injured. The victims’ conditions range from stable to serious. Six people were treated and released on scene.

Several area agencies worked together to transport the victim and clean up the crash site, including the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and Fire Departments, Indiana State Police, as well as EMS, and Carmel first responders. Hazmat teams were also called to the accident scene to clean up a diesel spill caused by the accident.

Families of the passengers gathered at Colonial Hill Baptist Church for updates on their loved ones. Mayor Ballard stopped by to talk to families and give a brief news update. He also tweeted: “Such a terrible loss of life in the bus accident. In typical Hoosier fashion, many rushed to help along with IMPD, IFD & ISP.”
