UPDATE (8:17 a.m.): East Washington Street has reopened following the fatal crash.

ORIGINAL POST (6:12 a.m.): Metro police are on the scene of a fatal crash on the city’s east side.

The crash was called in to dispatchers around 5:55 a.m. Friday at East Washington Street and North Whittier Place.

Police believe the crash happened when an SUV and a scooter were traveling westbound on East Washington Street.

A preliminary investigation leads police to believe the SUV slowed down or braked causing the scooter to strike the rear of the SUV.

The occupants of the SUV are okay. The rider of the scooter died at the scene.

A Fatal Alcohol Crash Team and Marion County Coroner responded to the scene.

Police expect East Washington Street to be blocked between Ritter and Irvington until mid-morning and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

The crash scene is in front of an IPS school. School officials are aware of the crash and will make sure buses do not drop off children where they would be able to see the accident.
