INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man was found dead in a near west side house fire that police say is being investigated in connection with a nearby stabbing.

When firefighters arrived at the scene in the 900 block of North Rochester Avenue, fire and smoke were showing. That was shortly after 4 a.m. Officials say the blaze was under control in about 25 minutes.

The deceased man, later identified as 22-year-old Cameron Welcher, was found on one side of the home, while another man was able to get out on the other side. He suffered minor injuries.

One side of the home suffered extreme smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is unknown and authorities are investigating. There were no working smoke detectors.
