KOKOMO, Ind. -- Howard County Sergeant Jordan Buckley, who was injured in the shootout that killed Deputy Carl Kootnz, returns to work today.
The incident happened in Russiaville back in March while Koontz and Buckley were serving a warrant. Buckley was shot, but has since recovered. Koontz was shot and killed.
Koontz was just shy of turning 27 years old. The young husband and father was laid to rest after a memorial service at Northwestern High School, where he served as a resource officer. Thousands showed up for the service, lining the procession route.
Since then, the community continues to show support. Over the weekend, hockey teams made up of police and fire departments played in a charity game to benefit the Koontz and Buckley families.
“The community has really come together, not just our community locally but all around the United States; the amount of support is just amazing and it means a lot to the families, especially the Koontz family,” said Sgt. Jordan Buckley.
“It’s going to be a long road to recovery – I don’t think this road has an end point necessarily, it’s something that we’re all going to carry with us,” Buckley said.
