INDIANAPOLIS – A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was hurt while apprehending a suspect, necessitating a rescue after he fell through a staircase Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators were chasing after Robert Rexroat, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant. Deputies followed him to a vacant home in the 1600 block of Draper Street. While they were apprehending him, the staircase collapsed on the home’s second level. Corporal Brad Allen fell into the cellar.

A rescue crew from the Indianapolis Fire Department arrived at the scene and launched a rope rescue. They pulled him out after about 35 minutes.

Allen suffered minor back injuries.
