State leaders working to address job applicant skills mismatch

Employers across the state are noticing a trend among applicants: their skills don’t match the job they’re applying for.

It’s a problem so common, some business analysts are calling it a “major mismatch.”

Wednesday, Governor Mike Pence and State Superintendent Glenda Ritz took part in a round-table discussion to figure out how to change the trend.

Business owners say they have a lot of applicants but job seekers aren’t adequately prepared for the job they’re seeking.

“We have a mindset of everyone needs to go to a four-year college. Unfortunately, that’s not realistic for everybody. Not everyone is cut out that way so therefore, it is going to require changing a mindset,” said Tanya Hall, an economic research analyst.

Some possible solutions are to provide more career-ready training in high school and encouraging two-year college students to further their education.
