SHELBY COUNTY – Police in Shelbyville captured a “dangerous” couple after a large search effort.

The Shelbyville Police Department confirmed that 18-year-old Desiree D. Cox and 31-year-old Robert Neil Clawson Jr. are in custody. Police said “quick action” from a caller ultimately allowed them to find and arrest the duo on Mausoleum Road near the railroad tracks west of Michigan Road in Shelby County. Authorities said the couple had plans to abduct a child.

The Indiana State Police and the White County Sheriff’s Department have warrants for Cox and Clawson on charges of revocation of suspended sentence. The original charges are theft, and they’re currently being held on those charges. Local charges could be filed at a later date, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. Police said they received several calls and tips that aided in their search.

Authorities in Shelby County warned parents to keep an eye on their children as they looked for the pair. During an overnight search, Shelbyville police officers and Shelby County sheriff’s deputies watched gas stations, stores, parks, railroad tracks and bridges for any sign of the couple.

Police said Thursday that both are believed to be dangerous and pose a threat. They were last seen at a Circle K gas station in Shelbyville and were thought to be traveling on a moped.

Shelbyville police visited area schools on Thursday to alert them. Schools informed parents immediately.

“Your kids can’t go out and play anymore. You can’t let them out in your own yard. They can’t walk home from school,” said concerned parent Brandy Balting. “Even at school they held them after school in the cafeteria, the car riders, and then parents had to go in and sign them out.”
