Study: Diet soda consumption linked to heart disease

(March 31, 2014) – Diet drinks may help you cut calories, but they could also be linked to heart disease.

Researchers say older women who have two or more diet sodas a day are 30 percent more likely to have a heart attack or stroke and 50 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than women who rarely or never drink diet soda.

Researchers say the connection between diet soda and heart disease is unclear—they’re uncertain if it’s something in the soda or if women who drink it are trying to offset other unhealthy habits.

The findings were presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
