CANONSBURG, Pa. — The coroner says one of two western Pennsylvania police officers shot while responding to a domestic situation has died. The man accused of shooting them is also dead.
Washington County Coroner Tim Warco wouldn’t identify the Canonsburg officer who was slain because relatives are still being notified.
Canonsburg and state police say the incident began about 3:15 a.m. when officers were called in response to a domestic situation.
Trooper Melinda Bondarenka told reporters that the officers were immediately met with gunfire when they arrived.
The surviving officer has been flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition wasn’t immediately available.
Police said the suspect, Michael Cwiklinski, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to KDKA.
Police and SWAT teams had been searching nearby homes after the shooting, and area schools were put on lockdown as a precaution.
