INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police took a man into custody early Monday morning after a SWAT standoff.

According to IMPD, officers initiated a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. Sunday near Howard Street and Shepard Street on the near southwest side.

During that stop, a man got out of the car and fired shots at two officers. Several shots hit their police car, but the officers were not injured and didn’t return fire.

Another person in the car surrendered to officers, but police said the man who fired the shots got back into the car and took off.

IMPD tracked him to a house in the 1300 block of South Belmont Avenue. IMPD’s SWAT team was called to the scene and negotiators tried to contact the suspect multiple times. After repeated attempts with no response, officers obtained a warrant and entered the home.

The man was then taken into custody.
