LAFAYETTE, Ind. (June 27, 2015) – Lafayette Police responded to a call at a residence on the 300 block of S. 18th St., near Main St.

Police say Cartilus Walters forcibly entered the home and armed himself with a large kitchen knife.

Walters inflicted wounds on himself and then threatened to hurt the people in the home.

When officers arrived on scene and confronted him, he retreated into the home and barricaded himself inside.

Police say he stacked furniture behind the door, so police couldn’t get inside.

Officers attempted to speak with Walters, but were unsuccessful. Lafayette SWAT and Negotiation teams were then called to the scene.

Negotiators tried to speak to him via cell phone, but he refused to answer their calls. After multiple failed attempts, SWAT deployed gas into the house.

Minutes later Walters was taken into custody. He now faces multiple charges including burglary and resisting law enforcement.

Police took Walters to the hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted wounds.
