COLUMBUS (Sept. 11, 2014) – Columbus police were negotiating with a man during a SWAT standoff Thursday.

According to Sgt. Matt Harris with the Columbus Police Department, the incident started before 11 a.m. in the 2600 block of Wedgewood Drive.

Harris said it began as a domestic disturbance call in which a woman told police she was held against her will before escaping. She told police that the man threatened to harm himself and others, Harris said.

A man holed himself up in the home and wouldn’t come out, Harris said. Negotiators were on the scene. Negotions were unsuccessful, and police fired a chemical irritant into the home to try and force the man to exit.

Zak Shafer, 42, of Columbus, was arrested. He faces preliminary charges of invasion of privacy and resisting law enforcement.
