INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 26, 2016) — A Lawrence North student accused of shooting another teen outside of Lawrence Central High School is set to appear in court Tuesday morning.

Paul Rayner, 17, is accused of shooting a 15-year-old boy outside of the gym during the final moments of a basketball game at Lawrence Central on Friday night. The boy was shot in the leg and taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health for treatment.

According to court documents, the victim and several witnesses identified Raynor as the shooter. Officers contacted Rayner’s guardian and she brought him into the station.

While talking to police, Rayner admitted he had a gun for protection and told them he “fired it in the air” on Friday to frighten a large group that followed him outside. He told police he threw the gun in a lake after the shooting.

Both the suspect and the victim told police they and their friends had been involved in an ongoing fight for more than a year now. The groups were involved in prior incidents, most of which happened in the Castleton area.

Rayner has been charged with criminal recklessness, carrying a handgun without a license, and dangerous possession of a firearm. He’s being charged as an adult.

Meanwhile, school district officials say they’re working with the Lawrence Police Department to review their security plans for extracurricular activities.
