HAMMOND (Jan. 9, 2014) – A house fire killed three children in northwest Indiana late Wednesday night, and fire officials say a man was badly burned after rescuing two other children.

The fire killed a 7-month-old infant and siblings ages three and four.

The surviving children (ages 3 and 6) and their father were taken to a local hospital before going to a Chicago-area burn unit. They were last listed in critical condition.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 600 block of Sibley Street around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hammond Fire Department. Flames had engulfed the home by the time crews arrived.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
