PIKE COUNTY, Ind.– Indiana Department of Natural Resources officers say a 12-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy died Thursday after falling through ice.

Conservation officers were called to the scene in southern Pike County around 5:15 p.m.

The two children were rescued from the icy waters. The first victim was rescued within 20 minutes and the other was rescued within 40 minutes.

Each victim was underneath the water for at least 30 minutes before being rescued. Both were transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for treatment, where they died from their injuries.

Officers are still investigating the case and do not know why the children were on the ice.

Autopsies are scheduled for Saturday. No foul play is suspected at this time.

DNR recommends to have at least four inches of ice to support the weight of a person and to always wear a life jacket.  No ice should be considered safe for walking on.
