BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. – Two people were killed and one person was seriously injured when their SUV was slammed by a train in Bartholomew County Monday night.
Indiana State Police responded to the crash near Edinburg at about 11:45 p.m.
Investigators believe the Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on County Road 900 North when the driver, 30-year-old Joshua L. Kelso, disregarded a stop sign and entered a railroad crossing into the path of a southbound Louisville-Indiana Railroad train.
Police say the train collided with the driver’s side, pushing the Jeep down the tracks and causing it to roll over before it stopped.
As a result of the collision, police say Kelso and a backseat passenger, 20-year-old Justice M. Llewellyn, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The front seat passenger, a 26-year-old woman, was ejected from the vehicle. She was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of serious injuries. The train engineer and conductor were not injured in the collision.
The investigation is ongoing at this time with toxicology results pending.
