INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 18, 2016) - Six people killed this weekend in Indianapolis bring the number of murders investigated by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police this year to 35.

The shootings happened throughout the city, some of them in broad daylight over the weekend. The week got off to a rough start when one man was shot  on the city's northeast side.

“We’re disappointed in individuals and the community that decided to take out acts of violence against another person in our community," IMPD Cpt. Richard Riddle said.

Members of the community and IMPD officers are frustrated with the violence. Cpt. Riddle said the suspects in this weekends murder had blatant disregard for human life.

“We had a shooting that stemmed probably over a stolen cell phone. We had other shootings that stemmed from ongoing disputes from neighborhoods where these individuals knew each other," Riddle said.

While the increase in murders may be concerning, Riddle said neighbors need to know the shootings are not random. The suspects and the victims knew each other and many of them had ongoing disputes, choosing this weekend to take out their aggression.

IMPD officers said they were prepared for the weekend and had an increased number of officers on the street. Riddle said just because you may not see an increase in IMPD Patrol cars doesn't mean officers aren't out in your neighborhood.

“We were staffed. We had officers out. They were in the areas they were supposed to be in. Unfortunately, we had a rash of violence that did occur," Riddle stated. He added, "people have to remember, the police can’t be everywhere, everytime.”

Police said right now, there's been no arrests in the weekend murders, but police do have strong leads. If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
