WEST LAFAYETTE (Dec. 28, 2014) – A tip from a group of witnesses led to the quick arrest of a West Lafayette man Saturday morning after they saw him pouring gas onto several vehicles and then attempt to set them on fire.

Christian M. Newcomb, 22, West Lafayette is facing  preliminary charges of attempted arson and public intoxication, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses told police that Newcomb poured gasoline onto five different vehicles parked in the 2300 block of Willowbrook Circle and attempted to set fire to one vehicle with a lighter.

According to witnesses, Newcomb  placed a piece of cloth inside the gas tank of one vehicle and attempted to light the cloth.

West Lafayette officers found Newcomb walking away from several vehicles about 4 a.m. smelling of gasoline.

Investigators also found a gasoline can burning in a nearby dumpster but that was quickly extinguished by the Wabash Township Volunteer Fire Department with no damage being reported.
