(June 30, 2015) – A new “fashion trend” is going viral on social media, and it could very well be the worst fashion trend ever.
That’s because it could potentially result in skin cancer and even death.
The concept of “sunburn art” is that people artistically apply sunblock on certain areas of their bodies, so that when they burn the pattern on their skin looks like a design.
But behind the artistry is the real threat of skin cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.
According to statistics, 65,647 people in the United States were diagnosed with melanoma in 2011, and 9,128 of those people died from the cancer. And in most cases the cancer is preventable.
The CDC recommends that every one of all skin colors and ages wear sunscreen on all areas of their body. Apply a cream with an SPF of 15 or higher once every two hours.
