TERRE HAUTE – Just 74 pounds—that’s how much Sunny Sober weighs.
At 27 years old, she’s about the size of an average 10-year-old child because of multiple health issues over the past 15 years.
“I ended up losing a bunch of weight. By ninth grade, they took me out of school. I couldn’t go to school anymore. I just didn’t have the energy,” she said.
Sober said she has more than a hundred parasites throughout her body along with multiple health concerns. Doctors diagnosed her with malabsorption—no matter how much she eats, her body won’t absorb the nutrients. She’s starving to death.
“Since I can’t absorb it, I can’t put on the weight and heal,” Sober said, adding that the condition affects everything she does. “Just day to day, it’s…there’s just days I’m here (at home) a lot of days. I can’t go out. I can’t do much.”
Sober would have every right to take a negative view of life. Instead, she has an undoubtedly “sunny” disposition. How does she stay so positive?
“It’s the Lord. Ever since I was little, I got saved, and I knew God would heal me. And He’s helped me through it all. Everything that I’ve been through, it’s definitely been hard, but He’s my rock.”
She also has another “rock” in her life—her husband A.J. Together, they’re trying to raise $45,000 during the month of April so Sunny can go to Total Health Institute, a place that specializes in chronic illnesses.
They’ve set up a website to raise that money. Donations can also be made at any First Financial Bank under “Saving Sunny” or mailed to P.O. Box 2122, Terre Haute, IN 47802. Contact her directly by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
