MUNCIE – A woman accused of tossing a live puppy in a trash can now faces formal charges

Shemika Robinson, 36 has been formally charged with abandon or neglect of an animal, a misdemeanor. Robinson will receive a summons to appear in court. An initial hearing is set for March 25.

According to investigators, Robinson threw the puppy in the trash around Feb. 13. A sanitation worker found the pup inside a trash bag.

Robinson told investigators that she thought the puppy had died from parvo and that’s why she threw the dog away. Veterinarians later determined that the puppy wasn’t sick from parvo. Instead, he was malnourished and suffered from low blood sugar.

Mike Upchurch, the sanitation worker who discovered the 6-week-old puppy, named him “Garby” and adopted him.
