AVON, Ind. – Authorities in Avon are investigating a house fire that left a woman dead.

Crews were called to the 7600 block of Buttercup Court shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said it appears the fire originated in the kitchen. Firefighters found the woman unconscious in the living room. She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. She later died from her injuries, officials said. The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as 32-year-old Jessica Elston.

Investigators initially said that Elston may have suffered from smoke inhalation. Two dogs were also killed despite efforts to resuscitate them.

The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation is a collaboration involving the Avon Fire Department and the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Elston was an employee at the University of Indianapolis. The school issued the following statement:

The University of Indianapolis has learned an employee at the university library passed away Wednesday in a house fire in Hendricks County.

Jessica Elston, 32, had worked since October 2016 as a part-time administrative assistant in the Krannert Memorial Library on campus.

The entire Greyhound community mourns her loss and sends it thoughts and prayers to Jessica’s family and friends during this tragic time. The University has made counseling services available to any students or co-workers who may need assistance.
