INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police say a woman died after a shooting Wednesday night on the city’s near west side.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Winfield Avenue around 10:45 p.m. on a report of shots fired in the area.

When responding officers arrived on scene, they say they heard multiple gunshots, a crashing sound, and then a car alarm.

A short distance away, police found a woman inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Officers also say a young child, approximately 5 to 7 years-old, was in the back seat of the car.

The woman, later identified as 22-year-old Charlese Zinnerman, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The child was unharmed. Police announced Zinnerman's death Thursday night.

IMPD Deputy Chief of Patrol Valerie Cunningham said the passenger window of the vehicle was broken, leading officers to believe the gunshot came through the passenger window of the vehicle.

Responding officers say they think the trauma from the gunshot caused the victim to lose control of the vehicle and crash.

Officers found shell casings on the street, but did not locate a weapon.

No suspect information has been released at this time.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
