UPDATE (Jan. 17, 2018) – Baker was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Original Story:

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 15 2015) — An Indianapolis mother was murdered and the victim’s husband is now behind bars accused of the crime.

When police brought the suspect downtown for an interview, they say he quickly admitted what he did.

Whatever the reason for the killing, the shooting left people who knew the victim absolutely heartbroken.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s sad. I can’t imagine a husband killing a wife,” said neighbor Ashley Southall.

The victim is identified as 28-year-old Penny Jones.

Ashley says the crime is even more horrific because the victims two kids were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

“It’s sad for the kids,” said Southall. “They probably want nothing more than to hug their mother and they can’t have her.”

Police arrested Jones’ husband, 31-year-old Dorian Barker, for the murder.

While it’s clear the killing is domestic related, police couldn’t say what exactly sparked the shooting, but the suspect quickly confessed.

“What he told detectives was that he shot his wife. That was one of the first comments he made, so we detained him,” said IMPD officer Rafael Diaz.

Throughout the day, several family members showed up to the scene leaving neighbors to witness the raw emotion firsthand.

“When I heard them outside crying I cried in bed with them,” said Southall. “It’s heartbreaking. No one should have to go through that pain and heartache.”

This case is the city’s 140th homicide of the year.

That is one of the highest totals on record.
