HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (May 14, 2016)–An 18-year-old male died Saturday afternoon following an “freak accident” involving a stump grinder.

The teen from Yorktown, Indiana was helping his uncle on a tree removal job at a private residence on Blackford County Road 200 North,  east of State Road 3.  The uncle owns Homeland Tree Service.

According to Blackford County Coroner, Tod Waters, the teen was positioning the grinder over a stump when he suddenly became entangled in the machinery.

Waters said the young man suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are looking into whether some of his clothing may have come in contact with the spinning grinder.

Waters said the stump grinder appeared to be operating normally and described the mishap as a “freak accident.”

The victim’s name has not  been released.
