This morning “Your Town Friday” is heading to Nineveh! You’ll find the small Johnson County town about 30 miles south of downtown Indy. For most people, Nineveh is just a town you pass through, but next time you’re in that neck of the woods, consider stopping by their corner store. Inside, you’ll find more than just a town convenience store!
“I usually tell people I have everything but what you’re looking for,” said Rob Wilson, owner of Cornerstone Contracting.
At Cornerstone Contracting in downtown Nineveh, there’s more than meets the eye!
“We sell a little bit of everything. We have bait tackles, we sell guns and ammo, hardware, lawn and garden, we have produce outside and a little gift shop next door,” said Rob.
Downtown Nineveh is quite a ways away from your big box stores, so Cornerstone Contacting is convenient for locals, but you’ll find some interesting one-of-a-kind items as well.
“We just want them to come in and see what we have. We know a lot of people, with all the advertising we do, they’ll come in and say oh I didn’t know you had that…so they just need to get inside the store and see what we have and see what we can do to help them. We have antiques and gifts and crafts next door in the building and we have straw. People need straw in the winter time and they’re not going to find that anywhere,” said Rob.
Rob Wilson runs the shop with his wife. They enjoy conversing with regular customers as well as the ones that stumble upon the shop while passing through town.
“We try to meet everyone at the front door as soon as they come in. We say hey how you doing, how can we help you today and we try to guide them to where it’s at because we have stuff everywhere,” said Rob.
“People just come to chit-chat; tell stories, like any small town environment. It is on the way to a lot of places and a lot of people don’t realize Nineveh is here. We have a 4-way stop and they usually stop there and go on, but I think if you would stop you would see a lot of history,” said long-time resident, Doris Jean Burgett.
Back in the early 19th century, Nineveh was actually called Williamsburg. The town’s name eventually changed and was named after the Nineveh Creek.
Doris Jean Burgett was born and raised in Nineveh. She shows me a historic downtown building that holds many memories for residents.
“This building has been around a long time. It was a grocery store, it had four different owners and where I come into it and remember it is when Mr. Browning owned it and he built a canteen upstairs which was unusual for Nineveh. Nineveh is such a small town you wouldn’t believe it, but we had this canteen that was so much fun. There was this iron stairway on the outside where we could get to and from it and that went on for a few years which was really good for the community. Back in the early 90’s I had a T-shirt shop in there. A lot of people would stop and order T-shirts and personalize them and this was around Christmas too so we had a lot of business which was surprising,” said Doris.
Today the old building is made up of apartments but people who pass through town will often check it out and snap a few pix!
“Because you don’t find old buildings anymore, this is pretty! There are decorations molded into it, it’s very pretty, there are steps in the back, the old fashioned iron steps are back there and it’s the tallest building in Nineveh,” said Doris.
And a fun fact about Nineveh, some scenes from the movie “Hoosiers” were shot in the old Nineveh Elementary School which was renamed “Hickory High School” for the film!
