(Nov. 21, 2014) -- This morning “Your Town Friday” is headed to Plainfield.  You’ll find the Hendricks County town about 14 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis.  While the town is known for their parks and trails, we know it’s cold outside!  So we have another option for you and the family.

First a little history: Plainfield dates back to 1839 and this year is a special one for the town.  They are celebrating their 175th anniversary.  The farming industry brought many people to the area over the years and today roughly 30,000 Hoosiers call Plainfield, home.

Over the last few years, the historic downtown area has undergone a major façade improvement program.    And just this past year, the Oasis Diner was moved to Plainfield’s downtown district.  It is set to open tomorrow!

Over on the west side of town, the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.  The huge two-story facility houses three basketball courts, a fitness center, an indoor track and the very popular aquatic center.

“It is a very close, family-friendly opportunity for folks, a one tank trip if you will.  We really do encourage folks to get out and be active and that’s another great reason we have a lot of active play and often times people are looking for that family workplace balance and we believe you can find it here,” said Plainfield Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Nate Thorne.

A big hit during the summer time is the center’s Splash Island Family Waterpark!

“We really gear up for our more than four acre waterpark outside, we have many slides, a leisure river and a lot of family fun,” said Thorne.

While you may be longing for those summer-like temperatures, let’s face it, it’s cold outside!  But don’t worry! The whole family can go down slides and splash around indoors at the facility too.

We know you’ll be doing some holiday shopping in the coming weeks so we have some neat options and a great way you can fill your belly and sit back and relax after you’re done picking out all those gifts.

Need some sort of stocking stuffer or gift for a teacher or co-worker? Stop by Heidi Pops Gourmet Popcorn at the Metropolis Lifestyle Center in Plainfield.  Russell Greene and his wife Heidi opened the shop two months ago.

“(We have) everything from 20 different candy flavors as well as dill pickle, salt and vinegar flavor, the best sellers are caramel, caramel with pecans and sharp cheddar,” said Greene.

They chose a space at Metropolis because of the foot traffic.  Russell says popcorn is an impulse buy.

“I think it has a reputation over the years of being a family fun food, you can carry it anywhere to snack on,” said Greene.

In between all of that shopping, Metropolis is holding many holiday events for all to enjoy.

“We just put the finishing touches on our 54-foot holiday tree in the park and we’re excited we have a couple of events happening.  One of them is tonight from 5-7 p.m. and we have events on Dec. 6 and Dec. 20,” said Metropolis Marketing Coordinator Tammy Haenlein.

Bundle up and watch those Christmas lights illuminate the night sky and enjoy some singing dancing and tasty treats out by the tree tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.

“The community comes together especially this time of year to support our local shops, I see a lot of people coming out for events.  It’s a great celebration,” said Tammy.

Afterwards, head over to Three Pints Brewpub, a brewery that brews onsite.

“We do everything from a blonde lager to a stout to specialty brews,” said General Manager Danita Timmons.

And they just released an updated menu featuring some Midwest classics with a spin.

“Fried chicken tacos, fried green tomatoes, blue gill fish fry with all the trimmings, cole slaw and french fries and rustic apple tart we make in the kitchen,” said Timmons.
