INDIANAPOLIS – For the 12th time, a Corvette will pace the field for the Indianapolis 500.

Race officials revealed Thursday that the 2014 Corvette Stingray will serve as the official pace car for the 97th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

The seventh-generation car differs from the production models with track-mandated safety features and strobe lights. Chevrolet said the car’s powertrain will be able to pace the field without any upgrades thanks to its new 6.2L LT1 engine.

The 2014 Corvette Stringray goes on sale this fall.

This marks the 24th time a Chevrolet model has been selected as pace car, more than any other brand. The company’s Camaro has served in that capacity seven times; the Corvette a record 12 times.

The race is Sunday, May 26.
