WEST LAFAYETTE – Right after his team’s first round loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament, Matt Painter said he wanted to see if his team would be interested in playing more basketball.
Yes the NCAA and NIT Tournaments were out for Purdue since they finished under-.500 for the season but a chance to get in the College Basketball Invitational still existed.
Indeed the Boilermakers wanted to keep going as the school accepted an invitation to the CBI on Sunday night and will host Western Illinois in their tournament opener this Wednesday at Mackey Arena at 7 P.M.
“We’re happy for the chance to continue our season and excited that the Gazelle Group afforded us this opportunity,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said in a statement released by the school Sunday night. “I’m confident that this will be a positive step for the future of our program.”
If Purdue wins, they would face the winner of the first round game between Vermont and Santa Clara on Monday, March 25th.
