MUNCIE – For almost 20 minutes, players streamed onto the court to exchange handshakes and hugs.
Some did so as former teammates. Others were handing out greetings to former rivals. All were there to pay tribute to a rivalry set to come to an end.
On Friday night at the Muncie Fieldhouse, Central and South High Schools met for the final time before they are to be consolidated into one next season. It marks the end of a rivalry that has spanned half a century and included some of the best in Indiana high school basketball over the years.
A number of former players for both schools were among the capacity crowd at the fieldhouse to witness the regular season finale between the two rivals, which Central won 72-55 to improve to 6-3 on the season.
There is a chance both teams could still meet in the IHSAA State Tournament in March since each play in Class 3A’s Sectional 24.
