INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 30, 2016)--Good Wednesday afternoon! It's been a cloudy and mild day and temperatures are still expected to rise to the upper 60s this afternoon. Winds will continue to increase with gusts to 30 mph this afternoon.
Hi-resolution models bring some showers to central Indiana this afternoon with possible rain and thunder for the evening commute.
Widespread showers and t-storms are expected ahead of a low-pressure system overnight through Thursday morning. Some may be strong with gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Outside of t-storms, winds will gust to 40 mph Thursday morning.
Once the morning rain and t-storms clear, temperatures will quickly rebound to the low 70s Thursday afternoon with strong, southwesterly winds. Moisture will continue to increase as a cold front approaches the area from the west. Ingredients will be favorable for strong to severe t-storms Thursday afternoon and night.
There's a slight risk for Indiana and I've highlighted the area where the instability will be a bit higher and therefore the tornado threat a bit increased. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing hail and damaging winds and possibly a couple tornadoes. However, it should be known that if morning rain lingers through the day, that may limit the severe threat in the afternoon. If we get some clearing and temperatures rebound, the severe threat will be higher. Stay weather aware from 4 p.m. into the night hours on Thursday.
Rainfall amounts of 0.50 to 1.50 inches are possible with isolated higher totals through Thursday night.
Once the cold front moves through Thursday evening, temperatures will cool to the mid-40s Friday morning and highs Friday will be in the mid-50s with a slight chance of rain. The weekend looks nice and mostly sunny and breezy Saturday. Highs will be in the 50s. Temperatures will swing from the mid-60s Monday to the low 50s Tuesday as another cold front moves through. --Danielle Dozier
